In the war of the Davids that was the finale of " American Idol," the rocker David Cook beat the young favorite David Archuleta on Wednesday after a record-breaking tally of 97.5 million votes.
"This is amazing, thank you," Cook said at the upset, snaring 56 percent of the mammoth vote to Archuleta's 44 percent, a margin of 12 million votes, the night after the "Idol" judges had all but crowned the other David as winner.
Before the results were announced, in the final moments of a two-hour finale, judge Simon Cowell apologized for calling the competition for Archuleta the night before, saying that Cook sounded much better once he watched the show over.
It came as a surprise to Cook as well, who said to his brother on stage, "This is all your fault."
Each David enjoyed broad popularity all season; neither was ever in the bottom three all season.
Although Archuleta, 17, seemed to have the edge in the kind of pop that is typically the realm of the show, Cook seemed to ride on the successful gritty stylings of a past "Idol" contender who had been voted out too early in his season — Chris Daughtry, who went on to have a 4-million-selling debut rock album last year.
Cook, for his part, performed a duet with ZZ Top in the finale show, while Archuleta joined with contemporary group
